SASSA Disability Grant – Payment Dates, Requirements, Application and Status Check

SASSA Disability Grants (DG) provide government support to people who cannot work for six months or longer due to a physical or mental disability. It is also possible to apply for a Disability Grant if you have a permanent disability due to severe medical conditions, supported by a documented medical report.

Requirements for SASSA Disability Grant
Applicants for the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) disability grant must meet the following requirements:
- You must be a South African citizen, a permanent resident, or a refugee.
- You must be 18 to 59 years old.
- You must have a 13-digit barcoded identity document (ID).
- Not be placed in a state institution.
- You must not earn more than R86,280 if you’re single or R172,560 if you’re married.
- Singles should have assets worth no more than R1,227,600, and married couples should have assets worth no more than R2,455,200.
- A state-appointed doctor will examine you
- If you have any previous medical records, please bring them.
- A physical or mental disability prevents you from working permanently or temporarily for more than six months.
Also needed are the following documents:
- Your medical report and functional assessment report confirm your disability.
- Marriage certificate (if applicable).
- Proof of residence.
- Please provide proof of your income or dividends (if any).
- Proof of assets, including municipal value.
Important Note: A Care Dependency Grant can be applied for by your primary caregiver if you are under 18 and need permanent care. If you do not have an ID, you will need to complete an affidavit and provide proof that you applied for the document from the Department of Home Affairs. Applicants must apply for an ID within three months of applying for the grant if they have not already done so.
How to Apply for a SASSA Disability Grant?
To apply for a disability grant, you must complete the application form at your nearest South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) office in the presence of an SASSA officer. You will need to submit the following documents:
- Your 13-digit bar-coded identity document (ID). If you do not have an ID:
- Complete an affidavit using a standard SASSA format, signed in the presence of a Commissioner of Oaths who is not a SASSA official.
- Provide a sworn statement from a reputable person (such as a counselor, traditional leader, social worker, minister of religion, or school principal) who can verify your name and age.
- The SASSA official will take your fingerprints.
- You will be referred to the Department of Home Affairs to apply for an ID, and your application will be processed while you wait. If you fail to obtain an ID, your grant will be suspended.
- A medical report and functional assessment report confirming your disability.
- Proof of marital status (if applicable).
- Proof of residence.
- Proof of income or dividends (if applicable).
- Proof of assets, including the municipal value of your property.
- Proof of private pension (if applicable).
- Bank statements for the past three months.
- Refugee status permit and 13-digit refugee ID (if applicable).
- Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) document (‘blue book’) or a discharge certificate from your previous employer if you were employed.
- A copy of the will and the first and final liquidation and distribution accounts, if your spouse passed away within the last five years.
- Once your application is submitted, you will receive a receipt to keep as proof of your application.

- Your South African ID number (or refugee ID, or caretaker ID number) must be entered.
- Your SASSA Disability Grant application phone number should be provided.
- To submit your request to the SASSA check database, click the ‘Status Check’ button.
- Your Disability Grant status will be displayed, along with your grant payment status.
SASSA Care Dependency Grants are available to primary caregivers under 18 who need permanent care due to a disability. How much is the disability grant 2025 per month?

Why is my SASSA Disability Grant Suspended?

SASSA audits beneficiaries’ health and income status regularly to determine whether they can still receive a grant. Any change in your circumstances, such as your address, banking information, or health, should be reported to SASSA.
When Your SASSA Disability Grant Lapses
Under the following circumstances, your grant is suspended or lapsed.
- Personal circumstances change.
- SASSA verification results.
- SASSA review non-cooperation.
- Fraudulent behavior or misrepresentation discovered.
- According to the Department of Home Affairs, death has occurred.
- State-funded institution admission.
- For three consecutive months, you haven’t claimed your grant.
- Absence from South Africa for a long period.
Please note: Your grant will be reduced by 25% if you are admitted to a facility that has a contract with the state to care for you. You will be able to do that after four months of admission to the institution. You will receive your reduced grant back as soon as you leave the institution.
What to Do if Your Disability Grant Application Is Not Approved
Your Social Security office will explain the reasons why your grant application was denied if it is not approved. The Minister of Social Development may then be appealed to in writing, stating your reasons for disagreeing with him. Within 90 days of receiving notification of the outcome of your application, you may appeal.

- If your grant application is not approved, the social security office will explain why. Afterward, you can submit a written appeal explaining your disagreement to the Minister of Social Development.
