With persistent economic challenges, including high unemployment rates and rising living costs, these grants serve as a crucial lifeline for millions of South Africans. By increasing grant payments, the government aims to provide financial relief while ensuring fiscal sustainability.

Government Expenditure on Social Grants

For the 2025/26 financial year, the government has allocated R284.7 billion towards social grants. The budget breakdown is as follows:

  • R117.4 billion allocated for the Old Age Grant
  • R90.4 billion dedicated to the Child Support Grant
  • R77 billion assigned to other grant payments

These allocations underscore the government’s recognition of social grants as a fundamental tool in addressing economic inequality and providing essential support to vulnerable groups.

Challenges Faced in Finalizing the 2025 Budget Speech

The 2025 Budget Speech was initially scheduled for 19 February 2025. However, it was postponed due to political disagreements within the Government of National Unity (GNU) regarding a proposed increase in Value Added Tax (VAT). The delay created uncertainty, but the final speech delivered on 12 March 2025 confirmed the much-anticipated SASSA grant increases.

Conclusion

The 2025 SASSA grant increases bring much-needed financial relief to millions of South Africans. With rising living costs and economic challenges, these grants provide critical support to pensioners, disabled individuals, caregivers, and children.
